Downtown Durango
In 1880, when William Jackson Palmer, founder of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, spoke of his vision for the town that was to become Durango, he spoke of “quality of life.” Palmer sought to create a city of beauty and grace.
Today, 125 years since the official signing of the city charter, Durango’s Historic Downtown epitomizes its founder’s vision. This heart of Durango, the Downtown, beats with a pulse that charms, entices and enflames a spirit reminiscent of the “Old West,” yet at the same time it is a wholly contemporary hub for local commerce, civic engagement and social interaction. It is a place to “be.”
From unique, world class restaurants and dozens of one-of-a-kind retailers, to quintessential Durango events that celebrate the diversity of the region, Historic Downtown Durango offers up a magic that inspires artists and musicians, fuels pride of residence, engenders “fun,” and epitomizes the coveted “quality of life.”
